DCF/2 Disk Compression Facility for OS/2 Version 1.2
Introductory and Installation Notes
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════
The DCF/2 is an "on-the-fly" disk compression facility which
allows you to increase the effective data storage capacity of
your OS/2 computer system.
DCF/2 Virtual Disk Units, or VDUs, are formatted using the
OS/2 High Performance File System (HPFS). An HPFS-formatted
drive is faster and more efficient than the equivalent size
FAT (File Allocation Table) formatted drive. But most
importantly, you can use the DCF/2 to create and use HPFS
formatted drives ON TOP OF ANY EXISTING type of OS/2 disk
drive, including FAT, HPFS, FLOPPY -- even LAN logical disk
units!
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════
The DCF/2 and OS/2 Version Support
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════
This version of the DCF/2 allows you to create as many
virtual disk units as you have drive letters available. You
can 'put' those VDU's on any of your existing disk units as
long as you are running OS/2 2.11 or later (including the
"Performance OS/2" currently in beta release form).
IMPORTANT: If you are running a version of OS/2 prior to 2.11,
the HPFS is not supported. Place DCF/2 compressed drives only
on FAT-based devices. Do not place DCF/2 compressed drives
on your HPFS formatted partitions if running a version of OS/2
previous to OS/2 2.11 (OS/2 2.1 plus the Service Pak).
To order OS/2 2.1 Service Pak, call IBM at (800) 494-3044.
If the High Performance File System is not installed on your
system or the date-time stamp on the HPFS.IFS in your OS/2
directory is earlier than April 19, 1994, the install program
will automatically update your system's hpfs.ifs to that
level. The installation program does not check OS/2 versions.
OS/2 files are being provided on behalf of IBM for maintenance
purposes only and the rights and licenses to these files are
governed by the terms and conditions of the end user's OS/2
product license agreement.
We are grateful to IBM for having allowed us to include OS/2
files for these purposes on the DCF/2 distribution diskette.

The DCF/2 Installation Program
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════
The "DCF/2 Installation" screen asks you to select the
"Target Drive" for the DCF/2 program files. This is the
uncompressed drive from which you will run the DCF/2
programs. You will also enter on this screen the "Total
VDUs" to create. This number can be changed at a later
time.
If you are uncertain how many VDUs to create or what size to
make them, please depress the "HELP" button or push "F1" and
click on the "Installation" topic.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are using LAN-defined disk drives, stop your LAN
or undefine those disk units before continuing with the
DCF/2 installation!
If you are updating an existing DCF/2 1.1b or later, simply
click on the check box to "Update/Register Only" on the
"DCF/2 Installation" menu. The program will update your
existing DCF/2 program files, DESKTOP objects, and exit.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are updating an existing DCF/2 1.1a installation, please
refer to the Appendix in the online help -- before you start the
install program -- for the steps to follow in order to convert
your existing VDUs to 1.2 format.
During the next part of the installation you create each of
your VDUs. The first VDU you create will take the first
available drive letter on your system; the second will take
next available drive letter, and so on up to the total number
of VDUs you requested be created. If you have defined LAN drives
on your system, and you have not done so, be sure to logoff of
the network prior to creating your first VDU.
For each VDU, you select the drive letter for the "Host
Physical Unit for VDU" and the "Total Size in MB." The
"Host Physical Unit" is where the VDU container file is
stored. The "Total Size" is the total capacity OS/2 will
believe the drive has.
Having indicated your choices, you can now "Create or Update
VDU," get "Help," or "Exit/Cancel." The latter allows you
to change your mind or correct an unwanted choice.
Following the successful creation of your first VDU, the
process repeats itself for each subsequent VDU up to the
total number of VDUs you requested.
Once your VDUs have been created, the DCF/2 program files
are copied to the "Target Drive," and the program creates
the CONFIG.DCF file. This file will replace your existing
CONFIG.SYS file after you existing CONFIG.SYS file is saved
as CONFIG.!D!
You can choose not to have the DCF/2 installation program
update your CONFIG.SYS, but you MUST complete this part of
the installation process on your own in order to use your
compressed drive(s).
════════════════════════════════════════════
Changes to Your System Configuration File
════════════════════════════════════════════
The changes made to your CONFIG.SYS file will always be
delimited by lines and REM statements which explain what
was changed and when the change was made. The best way to
understand how this is done is to look at your CONFIG.SYS
file after your system has restarted.
The REMed delimiting lines can be deleted at any time should
you choose to so do, but do exercise caution so as not to
delete more than these accidentally.
════════════════════════════════════════════
Rebooting Your System
════════════════════════════════════════════
During the final part of the installation process, the
program display the DCF/2 README file. It will then
ask if you would like to restart your system at this
time.
The changes to your CONFIG.SYS are initialized only after your
system is restarted.
════════════════════════════════════════════
When the DCF/2 Sings . . .
════════════════════════════════════════════
The DCF/2 is "audio-enabled." These audible beeps inform you
when certain events are taking place, e.g., when the DCF2ACP
is "armed" of "disarmed," when the space manager program
updates a VDUs DCF2INFO.CMD, or when an error occurs, like
a failure on a lock to shared memory.
But when the DCF/2 REALLY sings, it means that this copy
of the DCF/2 is unlicensed. It is our gentle reminder to
the user that the DCF/2 is neither freeware nor shareware.
While we want you to have an opportunity to "evaluate" the
DCF/2, after you have completed your evaluation, we ask you to
either remove the software from your system or purchase a
licensed copy of it. Order information is included in the
REMINDER.LOG file in the root of your OS/2 boot drive.
